Through her work, Jane seeks to visualise how we fit together as individuals, as a community, within our surroundings and with God: a process she refers to as Mapping Wholeness. From present day local surroundings to challenging and inspiring years lived overseas, Jane explores her own and others lived-experiences of this journey. A visualisation is developed reflectively though community connection, meditation, sketching, photographing and writing. Her work finds light in our weighty, negotiated identity stories, carrying and weaving journeying, roots, faith, displacement and belonging. Jane’s work includes installation, 2D and wearable art; décor design, teaching and writing. She is largely self-taught and her art making is a sensory journey through interdisciplinary processes of research, medium, techniques and construction. I refer to my work as mapping wholeness, visually exploring how we fit together as individuals, as a community, within our surroundings and in partnership with God. My process is immersive as I explore identity stories and community narrative; and submerge myself in my surroundings and a community of faith. To this end, my creative process refers implicitly to Bourriauds Relational Art, with interaction, iteration and meditation being as significant in my art making journey as the final body of work.
As part of this reflective process I spend much time sketching, photographing and journaling to capture the journey of our shared spaces. The art that results engages with the complexities of displacement and belonging, faith, journeying and rootedness in the everyday, particularly when another's normal is so very different to our own, allowing the tension and vibrancy of difference to co-exist. Each piece is a unique visual commentary evoking reflection, memories and felt responses as we consider self within our own contexts and imagine others in theirs.
I am largely self-taught as I seek to visualise the mapping wholeness journey through installation, 2D and wearable art; and through various making techniques and mixed media, according to my research focus. These include paint, collage, textiles, wrought iron and ceramics, video and audio, portraits in chalk pastel and oil on charred wood, literal and stylized weaving, workshops and discussion events.
